Dave Hoole’s style of football won many admirers in the final few weeks of last season at Matlock Town and the Gladiators boss has revealed it emanates from being a Manchester City supporter.
He said: “I’m a Man City fan, although with Pep Guardiola it’s at the other end of the scale, but the formation he’s used and the football he’s produced has seen them second to none and they’ve won the Premier League in style.
“I’m not saying we can go out and play exactly like Man City but I’m a big believer in qualities such as working hard to keep the ball and I’ve taken that on board. I think we did that at the end of last season and it’s good to emulate a top side.”
Hoole is pleased that England have adopted this style.
“Gareth (Southgate) gave me a call and I put him on the right track,” he joked. “Seriously though I’m pleased that England have gone down the youth channel as in previous sides the household names haven’t performed.
“Youth is the way forward, the under 17s, 19s and 21s have all done very well recently, so why not the senior side? I believe in this so sticking my neck out I’m going for England to make the quarter or semi-finals.”
