Junior football: Wirksworth Colts U14s 5 Heanor Lions Juniors U14s 0
Wirksworth Colts continued their winning streak with another performance that showed the benefits of patience and strength of squad.
With Heanor coming back strongly at 1-0 down at the end of the first half, after Connor Simms had opened the scoring when running onto Chris Vickers’ impressive surge from the back, Wirksworth needed to up their game.
This they managed early in the second period when Josh Middleton stepped into midfield to increase the tempo and soon afterwards three substitutes all scored. Firstly, the in-form Joseph Potts cleverly flicked on Ben Cartwright’s volleyed pass for Henry Brownsey to advance and slot his shot past the impressive Heanor goalkeeper.
Then Laurence Bostock capped a breathtaking debut by taking Middleton’s pass in his stride and scoring with a low shot at the near post.
Even though Sam Nelson’s penalty was superbly tipped onto the post, after Middleton had been brought down, Will Cummins tapped home a fourth goal from Billy Morley’s corner.
With Kyle Hadfield marshalling the midfield with quiet authority, Wirksworth were by now in total control, reacting calmly to some fierce tackling, and Potts claimed his customary goal when he finished calmly after a Bostock cross from the right wing.
