Confusion surrounded The Kings Arms’ 2-0 away victory over Shirland Miners Welfare at the weekend, giving them a seven-point lead over their nearest rivals Hilcote United to potentially claim the Manor Pharmacy Matlock and District Football league championship.
With Hilcote involved in a ‘disciplinary procedure’, potentially enhancing their position and with two games left, Kings’ double strike from Craig Merrett secured a vital three points and gave them an unbeaten nine-match run into the end of the season.
Midweek fixtures and the final games on this coming Saturday will determine where the Len Land Premier Cup goes for the season.
Laburnum Saints successfully travelled to Riddings Rovers and, with goals from Andy Clifton, Jak Thornley and Rob Horton, they are still in the hunt to finish runners up after winning 3-2 over Cavendish Cup holders Rovers, whose goals came from Chris Turner and Gavin Bocking.
Darley Dale Lions claimed a 4-2 victory on the road against Woodthorpe Rovers with a brace from Wez Harrop,added to by Danny Stephenson and Gaz Whitworth. Rovers’ strikes came from Mark White and Gary Siddall.
AFC Lea Holloway came back from three goals down within the first 20 minutes to earn at 4-3 Lea Green victory against Harvey’s Bar. It was the second hat-trick in two games from inspirational Shaun Bott that did the damage, with Adam Suett adding to the tally. Harvey’s’ early flurry saw two goals from Stuart Baker and another from Dominic Newton.
Final fixtures on Saturday include Wirksworth Albion v Riddings Rovers, Tibshelf v Laburnum Saints and Woodthorpe Rovers v Hilcote United.
