Wirksworth Colts U7s 3

Handley Wood 3

This was the second meeting for the two sides and proved to be a real nailbiter of a contest.

Play got under way with the first goal attempt from the opposition being taken confidently by Alexander Brough in goal.

Colts’ action came in the form of the quick legs of Harry Phillips streaking up the field, but on this occasion he missed the target. Handley Wood raised the bar in terms of attack, but Colts eagerly responded with some gritty defending by man of the match Harry Dachtler.

Like Wimbledon of old, play moved from end to end swiftly, seeing corners conceded from both sides in rapid succession.

Shortly before half time, fresh legs came on in the form of Thomas Wanford, who picked up the pace and added to his scorecard for the season, leaving the score 1-0 at half time to the Colts.

The second half saw more corners than the Via Gellia.

Handley gave away a free kick, which was lofted into the top left hand corner at a distance by Brough. The opposition responded with a quick two goals clearly not happy to submit.

Some amazing running from Will Heron was worthy of a shot, but Handley’s defence proved too strong for Colts. Towards the close of the match, Wanford benefitted from a fortunate bounce to add another to his tally.

Not to be outdone, Handley Wood fought back to draw level in what proved to be an evenly-matched game with both sides deserving the draw.
