Late goal joy for Albion

Littleover HM 3

Wirksworth Albion 4

The visitors went behind in the opening minutes of this Derby City Football League Premier Division match when a ball through the centre picked out Callum Betts in space and he fired his shot into the bottom corner.

Wirksworth equalised on ten minutes, Martin Dance and Jack Higton combining to play the ball into Scott Gascoyne who, from a central position, found the top corner with a scintillating strike.

The visitors looked the more threatening with Dance and Gascoyne going close, and they took the lead when Gascoyne dispossessed an HM player and ran on, before delivering to scorer Toby Howard.

Almost immediately, Littleover pulled level when Brian Barker’s long-range effort was deflected into the Albion net. The visitors were unlucky not to reply when Mark Brough saw his effort hit the post.

With seven minutes of the half remaining, the home side retook lead, Lee Tang taking on and beating the Wirksworth defence.

In the dying seconds of the half, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Scott Gascoyne’s dangerous run saw him upended by a home defender, Mark Brough stepping up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

The second half saw Wirksworth in control with Ben Waterfall and Martin Dance bossing the midfield area and Scott Gascoyne and Jack Higton a constant threat on the wings. Chances were created, the best of these seeing Howard denied by keeper Tony Penty, then both Brough and Higton see efforts go narrowly wide.

The winner came on 78 minutes when Howard’s corner was headed down by Scott Gascoyne into the path of Ben Waterfall’s run and he volleyed the ball high into the Littleover net, from just inside the area.
