Rowsley & District Under 14s Cup Final

Shirebrook 1

Matlock Town Junior Lions 3

The nervous Lions started without the composure and other attributes that have taken them to the primary cup final.

Within the opening two minutes, Shirebrook passed the ball neatly and, from an acute angle fired in a precise opening goal.

Despite being competitive, the Lions failed to attain superiority but after the interval a different animal entered the arena.

Generally, one-way traffic ensued with the relaxed and confident Lions adopted the style and craft often displayed.

Goalkeeper Taaffa orchestrating the rearguard line up of Main, Roberts, Wheeldon and Woolliscroft, their composure limited the opposition to half chances.

The adrenalin-charged midfield of Evans and Spencer, wingers Turner, Taylor and Richardson drove forward in wave after wave.

Strikers Brownlee and Pickard crafted chances only to be denied by the agile keeper and good fortune.

It was becoming unlikely that Shirebrook would endure the pressure for the remainder of the game and so it proved as Pickard’s mazy run and low shot finally saw the net bulge to bring on the equaliser.

The second from Taylor’s measured looping shot and a third by Woolliscroft’s drive sent the team and many numerous supporters ecstatic.

They were deserved victors on what was a great day to remember.

When the dust settles and the party is cleared away, the task of winning the Division One League title lies ahead with two games remaining.
