Matlock Girls score five in latest victory

GFC Alfreton u14 Girls 0

Matlock Town u14 Girls 5

Matlock recorded their third straight win with a comprehensive defeat of Alfreton.

The game was delayed to give the thick fog time to lift, and by kick off the sun had broken through.

Matlock began strongly and, within the first few minutes, had recorded several shots on the Alfreton goal. Alfreton came back into the game as the half progressed and had a few speculative shots on the Matlock goal but Amber Gratton, the Matlock keeper, with the help of her defenders Emily Marsden, Harley Wilson and Kathryn Heathcote, kept Alfreton at bay.

Matlock always try to play the ball on the deck, which saw some wonderful football with Courtney Charlton, Emily Hancock and Millie Bettis working well together in the middle of the pitch.

After 30 minutes, Matlock got their first goal. Kathryn Heathcote collected the ball in her own half and went on a mazy run towards the opposition’s goal which only to see her shot being parried by the Alfreton keeper into the path of Abbie Barlow who is shot struck the bar first before she then controlled the rebound to fire home.

Abbie Barlow struck again four minutes later when she ran onto a pass straight out of defence and calmly slotted home for 2-0.

The second half began with Matlock in the ascendency. Tarn Buxton, Annie Gardom and Melissa Hill controlled the play and broke down any Alfreton moves towards Matlock’s goal.

Connie Dalton, who worked tirelessly in the middle of the park, was rewarded with a goal all of her own making.

She received the ball just inside the Alfreton half, ran through the defence and placed the ball past the onrushing keeper to make it 3-0.

With Alfreton trying hard to score a consolation goal, Emily Marsden took the ball from the attacker, looked up and fired goalwards from inside her own box and saw the ball bounce over the keeper for 4-0.

Towards the end of the game, with both teams tiring, Matlock were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box.

Connie Dalton stepped up and fired home for 5-0.

So all in all this was another fine display from an ever-improving Matlock girls.
