Matlock Town U17s claimed victory in their season opener against Northern Premier Academy Chryso League reigning Champions.
Town’s U17s, also known as Matlock Town (White), ran out 2-1 winners away at Mickleover Sports (Black) after a strong and imposing performance.
Last year’s graduated U16s, now playing U17s level, began the game on the front foot and nearly took the lead in the opening stages through Josh Devereux.
Devereux crashed a fine effort against the woodwork and Mickleover managed to clear Declan Sorrell’s resulting shot off the line to keep the game level.
Mickleover’s resistance was soon broken however – Eddie Finney and Ethan Knowles linked up down the right-hand side and produced a pinpoint cross for target man Sorrell to notch his first of the season.
The sides went in at the half one goal to the good, and as the second began the young Gladiators flew out of the traps once more.
Compact forward Ethan Knowles provided his second assist of the game and Liam Carrington was on hand to hit home in style and double the advantage.
The home side sparked into life and pushed to find a way back into the game. With Captain Ashton Hall and goalkeeper Alfie Smith-Eccles standing strong in the back line, Mickleover only managed a consolation goal and couldn’t halt Matlock on their way to victory.
Second goalscorer Carrington was awarded Man of the Match for and impressive goal and display.
Elsewhere in the Matlock development sector, Town U18s were defeated 3-1 by Warrington Town in the Academy Joma League and Gladiators’ Reserves were also defeated 3-1 at the hands of Mickleover Royal British Legion FC in the Central Midlands League Cup.
