Preparing for the big match

Tonight’s league game at Southwell will hopefully prove the best rehearsal the Matlock Water Polo Club team could have for next Thursday’s handicap cup semi-final fixture against the same opponents.

In what has been touted as perhaps Matlock’s most significant game in recent times, the Arc Leisure Centre is the chosen final venue and so to be in that game would be a wonderful start to its history.

“Training is going well and we have a few tricks that will be saved,” said coach Richard Sellors after last Sunday’s preparations. Andy Massey serves his one-match ban and Paul Newcomb is expected to miss out through injury.

Concern was expressed this week as to whether the injury levels within the playing staff were linked to the fact that all club members graduating this year did so in biology.

With Tom Illingworth, Mike Glancy, Amy Pearson and Sam Pyne all getting good degree grades this summer, it may not be mere coincidence. The club’s desperate request for trained nutritionists and lifestyle coaches was not met at the time of going to press.
