The two divisions could merge on a regional basis to make League Two North and League Two South.

Lower league chairmen have already held early stage discussions about the proposal, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The coronavirus crisis has had a massive impact on lower league clubs who rely heavily on matchday income to pay bills.

As it stands, it seems unlikely that the new National League season will start in August as there is no appetite to start the campaign behind closed doors and considerable funds for testing players would be needed.
