Ashbourne Aztecs 1
Wirksworth Colts 1 (AET)
Derby City League, Saturday Under-14 Challenge Trophy second round
An outstanding exhibition of youth football at Osmaston Polo Park ended with these neighbours as equal as Barcelona and Real Madrid. Everyone hopes the replay next week will provide just as much quality football.
The tone for a display of inventive, passing football was set in the first minute as Wirksworth took the lead. Fed by man of the match Sam Paisley, Ben Cartwright played a one-two with Joe Lansley down the right wing, engineered the space to cross into the penalty area where Joseph Potts showed the touch and ingenuity to feed the ball wide for Scott Taylor to score with fine composure.
Then Conor Simms produced the perfect delivery from the flank for Will Cummins to lose his marker with some deft movement and sidefoot a neat volley just over the crossbar.
But Ashbourne were also capable of some penetrative passing and midway through the first half, they equalised when a pass through the middle invited their towering striker Charles Owens to thread his shot past Gary Waller.
The second half continued in the same vein, Wirksworth playing through the thirds but Ashbourne dangerous with the quality of their counter-attacking play. Dylan Garnett thrust forward from sweeper to go close with two powerful long-range strikes and then, in extra time, Simms drove just past the far post as both sides went for the win. A draw it was however which sets up the prospect of another fine game.
