Woodthorpe Rovers stormed to the championship summit in the Matlock and District Football League at the weekend with a 3-1 win but their management team has insisted that “our feet will stay on the ground”.
Rovers took on a Shirland side still affected by a sickness bug that has hampered their start to the season and Woodthorpe played with great passion and determination to deserve their place at the top of the table.
Elsewhere, Chesterfield town hammered five goals past Laburnum Saints in what was an entertaining game of football.
Hilcote United were being held at 1-1 until they came to life in the last ten minutes to take all three points with two late goals against a Darley Dale side that is yet to get any points on the table.
Shirebrook Rangers and All Inn FC ended their weekend sharing the points after a 1-1 draw.
In Division Two, Chesterfield Town reserves put four past Cromford Reserves in yet another good showing from the Chesterfield boys, Black Hippo drew two apiece against Codnor Miners, while Wirksworth couldn’t hang on against Matlock Sports, who ran out 1-0 winners.
Tansley hit three against AFC Lea Holloway, who responded with four fantastic goals to secure all three points.
The game of the weekend, with ten goals between them, was AFC South Wingfield against Riddings Rovers with the latter eventually going on to win the encounter 7-3.
