Rowsley are pegged back

Mickleover RBL 3

Rowsley 86 3

For the second time this season, Rowsley dropped two points from a winning position in the closing minutes of a Midland Regional Alliance Premier Division match, to slow down their push for the title.

It was Rowsley who started brightly. Following a dominant opening ten minutes of possession, Rowsley got their reward when Daniel Widdowson headed home from close range, latching onto a sublime Andrew Boyack cross.

Rowsley continued on the front foot and had good opportunities to double their lead through Aaron O’Neil, Tim Baker and Anthony Porter, all failing to beat the impressive RBL keeper.

It was Rowsley who added to their early goal, Daniel Widdowson doubling his tally, this time smashing home from six yards following a scramble after Boyack’s cross.

Rowsley looked comfortable for the remainder of the first half until a swift counter from RBL saw Daz Rushden latch onto a right wing cross and reduce the deficit two minutes before the break.

Into the second half and Rowsley continued to dominate possession, chances again falling to Baker, Boyack and Sam Hoskin, but they were all unable to extend Rowsley’s lead.

20 minutes into the second half and Rowsley seemed to have closed the game out when Porter headed home at the far post, latching onto Roome’s excellent cross. Rowsley had more opportunities to extend their lead through substitute Fletch and Hoskin but found the RBL keeper equal to their efforts.

All-out attacking play saw RBL press for the last ten minutes of the match and got to within one, Rushden doubling his tally, scoring from six yards. It was Rushden who would have the final say with five minutes remaining, towering above the Rowsley defence to complete his hat-trick and level the game.
