Wirksworth Sonics 2
Matlock Town Spartans 2
It was the Sonics who started the brightest with good pressure from William Howard and Finlay Surgey.
On ten minutes, a great team move presented Max Taylor Matkin with an opportunity in front of goal and he did not disappoint when he rifled home his second goal from ten yards.
Jasper Williams also chipped in with several runs from the defence but could not breach the Matlock goal.
A trip on Pearson led to a Sonics penalty just before the break and Wilkinson made no mistake from the spot when he nearly broke the back the back of the net to put his team two goals up at half-time.
The second half saw a more determined Matlock side with Howard, Surgey and Williams being put under constant pressure.
The ever-improving Daniel Repton worked hard up front for the Sonics and the fresh legs of Stephan Edwards giving more options out wide for the Sonics. Matlock eventually broke the deadlock with five minutes remaining and it was backs to the wall for the Sonics for the remainder of the match as Matlock strove for the equaliser.
Some great saves from Thomas ‘the cat’ Champion kept the Sonics in the lead, yet it wasn’t to be as a penalty was awarded in the last minute which was confidently struck home by the Matlock forward.
All in all, a great game by two energetic sides that were a credit to local football.
