Sonics prevail in a seven-goal thriller

Wirksworth Sonics U8 4

Matlock Spartans U8 3

Both sets of supporters were treated to a fine contest between two sides who gave 100 per cent effort at a windy Cavendish Fields.

The game was evenly balanced for the first five minutes with both goalkeepers being tested early on and some great passing by each side.

The deadlock was broken when a Steffan Edwards pass found Tobi Wilkinson who shot from inside his own half to take the Spartan keeper by surprise and give the Sonics the lead.

Sonics continued to press forward and a handball in the box resulted in the penalty effort being saved by the Spartans goalkeeper, only for Thomas Champion to be the first to react to slot home the rebound.

With Max Matkin in the Sonics goal remaining alert and Finlay Surgey being a rock in defence the platform was set for more goals, but it was Spartans who got a goal back despite some frantic defending and great goalkeeping.

Just after half-time Sonics increased their lead once more, with Rufus Sammels Moore and Toby Pearson heavily involved in the build up which left Jasper Williams to fire home his first goal for the Sonics.

The next five minutes saw Spartans go on the offensive and with two breakaway attacks they brought the scores level with ten minutes remaining.

But Sonics had no need to worry, as Surgey and Williams tackled like lions in defence to prevent any further Spartan attacks whilst Champion, Sammels Moore, Pearson and Edwards all stood tall in the midfield, with Daniel Repton continuing to work the line well up front.

And with two minutes remaining the some great tackling sent Wilkinson through on goal and he fired home to spark some great celebrations and to seal the victory for the Sonics.
