Spireites: Chesterfield forward Jay O’Shea believes players will learn from mistakes

The forward, 24, put pen to paper on an 18-month contract with the Spireites earlier this month following a brief loan spell at the Proact Stadium.

The Irishman made just 22 starts for Karl Robinson’s Dons since joining the League One side in the summer of 2011 from Birmingham City.

He left the Dons by mutual consent just days after his loan spell with Chesterfield came to an end.

Spireites manager Paul Cook is a long-standing admirer of O’Shea and was eager to bring him back to the club on a permanent basis.

And O’Shea said he is raring to go: “I’m really enjoying it at the moment. I’m playing in a role behind the striker that I’ve always wanted to play in. It’s a change in position for me but one that I am hoping to make the most out of.

“The biggest thing for me is to get back to enjoying my football again.

“I had a frustrating season at MK Dons but now I feel like I’m getting back to my best and it’s showing in games.”

O’Shea has found the back of the net three times in eight appearances for the Spireites since his arrival in December.

He scored the opening goal in the 3-0 demolition of Northampton Town just 24 hours after signing.

“It was the perfect start for me,” he said. “We have been on top in games but we need to get that first goal so that we are not chasing games.

“We look good when we’re ahead, it allows us to play to our strengths.”

And he revealed the Spireites are starting to learn from their mistakes in an attempt to break into the play-off mix.

He added: “I know clubs have got a game in hand over us but we’re close to the top seven and we will take each game as it comes.

“There’s a really good dressing room here that share the same ambition to get out of this league.”

And Spireites fans will be hoping O’Shea and his new team-mates will still be smiling come May.
