Mark Randall has left Chesterfield after the club decided against offering the 23-year-old a new deal.
The midfielder, who forged a promising reputation during his time with Premier League Arsenal, leaves after two years with the Spireites.
His future with the League Two side had been in doubt following the arrivals of central midfield men Jimmy Ryan and Sam Morsy.
And manager Paul Cook said the club chose not to offer Randall an extension to his contract, which has now expired.
Cook also revealed Chesterfield are still looking for another “strong, aggressive, holding type of midfielder”, while Southend United defender Ryan Cresswell remains a target.
