Richard Brindley hopes his stay at Chesterfield extends beyond the end of the current campaign.
The young full-back joined the Spireites from non-league Chelmsford City after a successful trial.
He progressed through the ranks at Premier League side Norwich City before being released in the summer of 2012 and dropping down the football pyramid.
Brindley said: “It’s hard to make that move from non-league back up because it’s a big step. My friends, family, agency helped me along and I refused to think otherwise.
“I kept telling myself and I refused otherwise but it does play on your mind the more you have to wait.”
He revealed Chesterfield had been tracking him since his time at Carrow Road and is eager to challenge for a place in the first team.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to progress with the club and I’d like to stay longer,” he added.
