The Spireites have seen 11 players leave the club since the final game of last season, including the retirement of Jack Lester.

But they have wasted no time in bolstering their depleted squad with the additions of Jimmy Ryan, Eoin Doyle and Aaron Chapman in recent weeks.

Southend United defender Ryan Cresswell is also believed to being closely monitored, as the League Two side go about adding much-needed defensive reinforcements.

Cresswell is said to be keen on a move north to be closer to his family but has a year left on his current deal at Southend and any possible transfer is likely to involve a fee.

With the departures of Neal Trotman, Richard Brindley and loanee Conor Townsend there are only five recognised defenders on the books, one of which is transfer listed Sam Hird.

“We’ve got another player right on the fringe of signing at the moment, hopefully in the next two or three days that gets clinched,” Turner told the club website on Monday.

He also hinted that the club is in advanced talks with two more players. The deals could be concluded when manager Paul Cook returns from his holiday.

Midfielders Craig Clay, Danny Whitaker, Jack Waddle were released while Mark Randall’s future remains in doubt following the arrival of Ryan.

He joins Sam Togwell, Tendayi Darikwa and Jay O’Shea in Cook’s midfield options.

Turner believes that the current group of players should be cause for great positivity amongst Chesterfield fans.

He added: “I’m really optimistic about this forthcoming season, I think the players we’ve already brought in added to the players that we’ve got here, we’ll have a fantastic season next year.”
