Marc Richards scored twice as Chesterfield drew at home to Port Vale just 48 hours after Drew Talbot’s wonder strike sealed all three points at rivals Burton Albion.

And assistant manager Wright said it has been an encouraging week for the Spireites - who are six points adrift of the League Two play-offs with five games remaining.

He said: “I feel positive from the last two performances. Against Burton I thought we were excellent against a team chasing promotion. I thought we controlled the game in large parts and passed the ball well.

“Today (Monday), we’re playing against one of the top two teams in the league. From an early setback I thought we controlled the game, kept calm and passed it.

“We got it in areas to get Jay O’Shea in and I thought Mark Randall worked the ball well and created space. We forced Port Vale into changing their system.”

Liam Cooper took a knock while Richards hobbled off just before the hour and Wright said it was a concern.

“Liam’s not as bad, he got a kick and a gash. Marc’s was a twist, we’re a bit more worried about that one,” he said.

Wright had special praise for the striker, who bagged his eighth and ninth goals of the season.

He added: “He’s not scored as many goals as some people would have liked but nobody doubts what a good player he is. He is a top striker in this division and hopefully next season he’ll score even more goals.”
