Spireites: ‘We never got going,’ says Chesterfield boss Paul Cook

Chesterfield recorded their third blank in succession in the stalemate at home to Aldershot on Tuesday night in front of 3,968 at the Proact Stadium.

A poor first half for a young Spireites side saw them amount just three efforts on goal.

Cook said: “It was a very poor first half and we never got going at all.

“Young lads have been thrown in at the deep end and it was a bit much for them early on. Physically, Aldershot had too much on us in the middle part of the pitch. They were causing no end of problems.

“Jack (Lester) coming on at half time gave us a lift. I thought we started the second half really well and had two or three shots in the space of two or three minutes.

“We felt we would go on to win the game. On the balance of the game it was a fair result.”

Chesterfield have struggled to find the back of the net for the majority of the campaign.

“We’re not scoring. For the last four or five years it has been Jack Lester who gets the goals. Unfortunately, rightly or wrongly, Jack can’t keep being the one, others have got to step up to the plate,” added Cook.

The Spireites slip to 14th in the League Two table - 11 points from the play-offs and eight points from the relegation zone.
