Matlock Town’s season finished in disappointment after losing the Derbyshire Senior Cup final to two late goals by Ilkeston FC then defeats to Worksop Town and Kendal Town were a bitter pill to swallow, but already all eyes are now trained on next season.
This season has been full of ups and downs and only two months ago could have ended with two cup finals.
But Matlock had a habit of falling at the last hurdle and with a small squad of players success was always going to be difficult to come by, especially with players carrying knocks and struggling immensely to even play two games a week.
The heart of these players who battled through and left everything they had deserves to be applauded and given a huge amount of respect as despite the season having so many ups and downs, those two games against Mansfield Town will be something I’ll remember and look back on for the rest of my life.
Next season is already coming into sight and with rumours regarding possible signings the excitement is already beginning to build again.
I feel this is a huge summer for Matlock and manager Mark Atkins who needs to get it right when it comes to bringing in players, especially after the Lee Ellington debacle who was thought by many fans to be our big signing last summer only to see him play eight games and score one goal, which is a horrendous record for a 31-year-old striker.
But hindsight is a marvellous thing and mistakes can happen, it’s all about learning from them and understanding what went wrong. Now bring on season 2013/2014 I say!
That’s all from me for this season.
I’ll be back once more when the pre-season matches begin and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my thoughts each week on everything Matlock Town.
Have a great summer.
