Matlock Town under 19s upset the form book in no uncertain terms at the weekend in the quarter-finals of the North Midlands Under 19s League Cup.
Matlock have been without a league win all season while opponents Mickleover Sports have not been beaten in Division One this campaign but that counted for nothing when the two teams came together at the Reynolds Stadium.
It was the underdogs of Matlock who struck as early as the first minute when Saul Asquith hit the net, and, after a thrilling night of traditional cup football, it was Matlock who deservedly came out on top with a shock but fully deserved 5-3 success.
Liam Henley scored twice while David Boden and Greg Marriott’s strikes completed the win and the shock of the round.
Kurtis Reid two and Ben Gowan replied for a Mickleover side who on the night were well beaten.
The semi-final draw now sees West Bridgford Colts from the Second Division up against the only First Division side left, Matlock Town, on March 2, while a day later Third Division Radford F.C. take on Second Division Retford United.
The coming week sees another strong line-up of league games in Division One.
These include Sheffield F.C. welcoming bottom-of-the table Matlock Town at the B.T. Local Business Stadium.
Matlock will undoubtedly be hoping the cup win inspires them to that elusive first league victory.
