Nobblers United have netted the top prize in the first ever small-sided league played at Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Arc Leisure Matlock.
Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales, Cllr Judith Twigg, made the presentations on Monday night (December 12) after 12 teams fought it out over 11 weeks to compete for the first trophy in the new facility’s history.
And it was Nobblers United, featuring a total of ten players all from the Matlock area, who triumphed to become the first ever winners of the Arc Small-Sided League.
Three teams were still in with a chance of winning the title going into the final games of the season, but Nobblers finished on top with 28 points out of a possible 33, scoring a fantastic 75 goals. Winster Wednesday were runners up on 26 points.
In addition, an Arc knockout cup competition was won by Matlock Warriors, who play as Matlock Sports at the weekend. The cup also involved 12 teams, with the Warriors winning the final in a thrilling penalty shoot-out.
The new league season starts on January 9, to be followed again by another cup competition. The Arc Small-Sided League is currently fully subscribed, but Derbyshire Dales District Council is aiming to create similar leagues at its leisure centres in Wirksworth and Ashbourne in April.
Cllr Twigg said: “We’ve all seen the amazing headline figure of well over 100,000 visits recorded since Arc Leisure Matlock opened at the end of August, but it’s also great to see the success of this league and cup competition, which are just a couple of the many organised events that are taking place at Arc.”
