The hosts suffered an early setback but led 2-1 at half-time and it could have been more with goalscorer Moses Emmanuel and pacy winger Dennon Lewis causing Town all sorts of problems.

Jacob Mendy’s long-range strike made it 3-1 with nine minutes to go, and Brennan’s side held on for a deserved three points despite Tom Denton grabbing his second goal of the game late on.

“It was a great game, I hope all of our supporters were tuned into it,” Brennan said.

“For us to beat clubs like Chesterfield...we are little old Wealdstone. They are a Football League club, let’s be honest.

“They are tough to handle, Chesterfield, very big, strong, physical, they changed their formation quite a lot, we gave away a penalty in the first minute, it had everything, loads of drama and fantastic goals.

“I thought our character was outstanding, we didn’t change the way we wanted to play, we kept trying to pass the ball, overload in wide areas, so it was a fantastic performance. We had to defend at the end.”

Denton scored a hat-trick for Chesterfield against Brennan’s Billericay in the FA Cup in November 2018 and bagged his fourth and fifth goals of the season on Tuesday night.

“Big Denton is such a handful,” Brennan said. “I think that’s five goals he has got against me in two games!

“They are an experienced team but I am extremely proud of my players tonight.”
