Wonderful Wirksworth Colts U13s have been crowned champions in their first season in the Derby City League.
Wirksworth sealed the Sunday Second Division title with a convincing 7-0 victory in their final match of the campaign away to Spondon Rovers.
The win gave them an unassailable four-point lead over runners-up Ashbourne Aztecs after a magnificent record of played 22, won 19, drawn one, lost two. They have amassed 58 points and scored 122 goals, conceding only 20. At home, they are unbeaten with ten wins from 11 matches.
Wirksworth’s success can be attributed to the hard work and determination the 15 boys in the squad have shown throughout the season.
One proud parent told the Mercury: “We can only stand and admire their achievements. The boys have grown in ability and personality, most notably in the last match when one of their teammates, who couldn’t play because of injury, was carried on to the pitch at the end, showing great team spirit and comradeship.
“This group has been together for seven years, and has been lucky enough to be coached by two dedicated people, Alan Potts and Matt Handley. I say thankyou to Alan and Matt for giving their spare time.”
