THE Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards 2011 have been launched by two previous winners.

Matlock’s Sam Mak picked up Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Junior Sportsman and the Year award in 2010, and Liz Broomhead MBE took the Service to Sport award in 2008.

Both are encouraging nominations of people living in the Derbyshire Dales area who have achieved success in the past year as a player, as a coach or administrator.

Sam, a Junior European Champion in the martial arts-based sport of wushu, said: “As athletes we always strive to achieve the very best, but it is important to know that your efforts have been recognised and valued by your local Council - so please take the time to nominate people for the Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards.”

Former Derbyshire and England netball coach Liz is also keen to encourage people to play their part in the Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards.

“Volunteers do what they do because they love people and want to share positive experiences,” she said.

“Please show them how much you value and love them by nominating the one you know for the Derbyshire Dales District Council Sports Awards. Volunteers aren’t paid but they are priceless.”

Eleven awards are to be given out this year, including awards for performance, volunteering in sport, for clubs and teams or as a young sports leader.

There is also an opportunity to celebrate the Unsung Hero of Sport (Service to Sport), which is for someone who has made a significant voluntary contribution to sport as an administrator or official over a minimum of five years.

Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Community & Environment Committee Cllr Janet Goodison said: “We know from listening to local people that active, healthy communities are a priority in the Derbyshire Dales.

“The opening later this summer of our £12 million Arc Leisure Matlock demonstrates how much importance the District Council attaches to making healthy living as accessible as possible to all ages and abilities, but we also believe it is right to recognise the excellence and commitment of local people who help the profile of sport in the Dales.”

Nomination forms are available from Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Sports Development Team on 01629 761225 or can be completed online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/sportsawards
