Golf season gets into full swing as Matlock GC hosts events

Matlock Golf Club have got the 2014 season underway with a series of tournaments and events.

The season began in earnest with the Winter League Cup which, due to adverse weather conditions, had been cancelled twice during 2013.

A stiff southerly breeze provided a testing challenge for the full field of 78 pairs.

A Better Ball Medal Score of 62 was a trophy-winning total for Mike Rapkins and Jim Watson, their better back nine score relegating Malc Morley and Pete Duggan into second place.

While the Winter Cup took place, lady captain, Helen Brown hosted a charity coffee Morning in the clubhouse with over £700 raised for Macmillan Care and The Parkinson’s Society.

Last Friday the Matlock Golfers and Members Club bowls section came together for the second annual Golfers v Bowlers Quiz Challenge.

The golfers secured their revenge over the bowlers by winning the quiz, with £85 being raised to be shared between the captain’s and bowlers funds.

Saturday saw Matlock Golf Club’s bowls section host an Open Day, where visitors were invited to view the club facilities and try their skill on the crown green.

Meanwhile, a sum of £866 was generated by members to support the development of the Matlock Golf Club Juniors Section in a Am-Am held at the club on Saturday (12th)

Playing Stableford format the teams of four with the best two scores to count on each hole competed in cold and breezy conditions which didn’t deter the competition winners Aaron Watson, Rob Dent, Craig Longmore and John Orchard who posted 92 points, four clear of second-placed M Rapkins, T Milne, C Milne, P Digle and in third place P Cash, C Lindley, P Clark and A Needham with 87 points.
