Youngster Matt doesn’t putt a foot wrong in trophy win

Fifteen-year-old Matt Bailey triumphed at this year’s Derbyshire Junior Championships when he came top of the pile in the under-16s event.

Taking part in a field that contained 25 players including the cream of the crop when it comes to young golfers in and around the region, Buxton and High Peak GC regular Matt prospered when it mattered the most.

Matt, who plays off a handicap of six, had entered the tournament on previous occasions but had failed to live up to his billing before this year’s event.

The St. Thomas More pupil managed to hold his nerve on the day, held this year at Alfreton GC, to seal the trophy.

Proud mum Joanne said: “We’re all really proud of Matt and what he’s done.

“He practices extremely hard and he’s done very well to achieve this.”

Matt now has strong ambitions of turning professional, and not long after his triumph at Alfreton he was back out on the course competing again.

He entered a two-day tournament at Duffield earlier this week and in September he is pencilled in to enter the Midland Junior Champion of Champions event.
