Burbage’s Luke Guess, aged 16, won a closely-contested White Cup final against Clive Lomas, of Chapel Park, to become the youngest bowler to win the trophy in its 50-plus year history.

The White Cup was played over the course of a week, featuring a field of over 70 which was whittled down to just eight local bowlers for the final rounds at The Rams Head bowling green in Disley.

In the quarter finals, Guess beat Joe Pyke (Whaley Bridge) 21-14, while Rex Hallows, of Peak Dale, triumphed by a similar scoreline over Fairfield’s Sean Waring.

It was a much closer contest between Lomas and James Golpin, of Whaley Bridge, with the former eventually winning 21-17.

Completing the last-four line-up was Peak Dale’s Callum Briddon, who beat teammate Richard Briddon 21-12.

The semi-finals featured two of the youngest bowlers in the association, in the form of Guess and 17-year-old Briddon.

Both ties went to a final end, with Guess and Lomas both winning with the last bowl of the end.

The final was an equally close affair, with Guess edging it 21-17.

Teenage golfers Guess and Briddon represent Derbyshire in the junior county matches, always playing in the top away side and with numerous victories to their names, despite playing on greens they have never seen before.

Together with other Buxton association bowlers, they are a great asset to the county.

• The Buxton and District Bowling Association’s annual presentation evening will be held at 8pm on Friday October 10 at Fairfield Sports & Social Club.
