First year rookies Harry Mailer and Benjamin Wallace continued their progression with front-running team Hillspeed in the Ginetta Junior Championship at Silverstone National Circuit on Sunday during an action-packed penultimate event of the 2014 season.
Delivering a career-best top 12 finish in the first of the weekend’s races, round 17, Mailer went on to add 14th place in round 18 to chalk-up his biggest points haul of the campaign for the Hathersage squad and provide boosted confidence ahead of the season finale a fortnight from now.
For team-mate Wallace, for whom the Silverstone event was only his second outing of the year, race one brought a 14th place result but in the second encounter he was unceremoniously barged off the track and into retirement on the opening lap after contact.
Lining-up 18th and 19th on the grid respectively for round 17, Wallace and Mailer each made good progress on lap one to gain a couple of positions and then, on the second tour, Mailer got ahead of his team-mate as the pair broke into the top 15.
Gaining another place on lap four, with Wallace following close behind, Mailer did slip behind his team-mate but ultimately ended the encounter inside the top 12 after his fellow Hillspeed driver was handed a five second time penalty when adjudged to have exceeded track limits – he was classified in 14th position.
For round 18, Wallace and Mailer lined-up in 16th and 17th positions respectively but the former’s involvement in the race didn’t last long at all when he was speared into retirement on the opening lap by an out-of-control Esmee Hawkey. Mailer, able to avoid chaos ahead, climbed into the top 10 and although shuffled back to 14th place before the end the result marked another positive finish.
Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit will host the final two rounds of the Ginetta Junior Championship season over the weekend 11th/12th October.
Following that, Hillspeed will also participate in the 2014 Ginetta Junior Winter Series at Snetterton 300 Circuit on 8th/9th November with both Mailer and Wallace having already confirmed deals with the Derbyshire team.
