Two fighters from Matlock’s JMMAC gym travelled to Walsall to compete in the recent West Midlands Combat League boxing and kickboxing event.
First up was Harry Mellor making his ring debut in a full contact boxing bout, his opponent the experienced Matt Welder from the home club.
The large number of travelling fans made sure the Matlock fighter was well supported and Mellor went off at furious pace in the opening round and kept Welder at bay with his constant jabs.
By the final third round both fighters were starting to slow but it was Mellor who had the strength and desire to see it throughand he secured a deserved and unanimous three-round victory.
Joe Firth was competing in three rounds of full contact kickboxing. Firth, a very experienced fighter, was pitched against Telford’s Sam Haynes in what can only be described as a mismatch with the Matlock man weighing in nearly seven kilos below his opponent.
In the first round Firth’s experience and skill saw him easily out-fight Haynes but as the fight progressed the extra weight and strength showed. A close points decision against Firth was disappointing but great effort under the circumstances.
Head coach Mark Ball said: “Our two boys put on a great display tonight. What pleased me most was the way they fought with the skill and discipline they both showed. It was also amazing to see the number of people that came down from Matlock and supported them.”
