Laburnum battle well but lose to free-scorers

Charlie’s Bar 4

Laburnum FC 3

Laburnum travelled to Clay Cross to play free-scoring Charlies Bar and were unfortunate to finish on the losing side in a high-scoring game.

An open start saw Laburnum begin well and chances were created particularly down the left-hand side from Matt Haywood.

But it was the home side who took the lead after 20 minutes when a corner was only partly cleared and a good cross was headed into the net.

Laburnum’s response was immediate when a corner was flicked on at the near post and stabbed home by Luke Travis.

Both teams were by now creating chances but it was the home side who re-took the lead just before half time when a cross was confidently struck home.

Laburnum started the second-half brightly, playing with more composure and able to create chances with Jimmy Thompson controlling midfield.

They were rewarded for their pressure when a through ball from Mark Stokes was well controlled and finished by Haywood for his 100th goal for the club.

Unfortunately for Laburnum, they then relaxed and were punished with two quick goals for Charlie’s Bar, and a late Jim Holmes header from a Grant Boden free-kick could not save the game.
