Lions hang on to defeat Calver

Darley Dale Lions 1 Calver 0

Lions hung on to secure a narrow Derbyshire Cup success at home to Calver at the weekend.

Lions fielded a depleted squad due to holidays and injuries, but five minutes in the first chance fell to Rhodes who headed just wide of the post and the second chance also fell to Rhodes too who headed down and Wright hit the bar.

The Lions broke the deadlock on the half hour mark as the Calver centre-back brought down a Lions player on the edge of the area only for Mark Ashton to convert into the bottom corner.

The second-half saw keeper Robert Marsden make the save of the game when a free-kick rebounded to a Calver forward, but Marsden saved superbly.

Lions continued to apply pressure but the Calver keeper was playing well and Liam Ashton hit both posts before also hitting the bar from four yards out.

In the 86th minute, Adam Quinn rounded the right back only to be denied by the goalie once more.

The last chance fell to Calver as a mistake at the back allowed the striker in one-on-one and he shot wide just as Rhodes clattered him to the ground, no penalty given and the win secured.
