Darley Dale and Ashford in the Water contested the final of the Longstone League Cup on July 1 at Great Longstone.

On a picturesque summer’s evening at the idyllic, quintessentially English Great Longstone ground, stand-in captain Brigg, won the toss and elected to bowl first on a firm but green-looking wicket.

Ashford in the Water’s proven big hitters of Carrington and Paulett opened the innings. However, they were dismissed early by the excellent bowling of Cotterill, who bowled Carrington, and Kershaw, who caught and bowled Paulett. Darley had the perfect start and continued to take wickets, restricting Ashford to a total of 84 all out.

This was a total they would have been pleased with after losing early wickets.

In reply, Darley’s openers Dave and Jacob Hartley batted with great respect for the accurate Ashford bowlers.

However, the odd loose ball was punished fashionably and Darley easily reached their total.

Dave Hartley scored a classy and elegant knock of 54 and was supported well throughtout by Jacob Hartley who guided Darley to their total.

Darley are pleased to lift the cup and will look forward to the defence of their title in the 2012 campaign.
