Matlock AC Round-up
On a very murky, drizzly Saturday, the annual UK and Irish Veteran’s International Masters Cross Country took place at Wollaton Park, Nottingham last weekend.
Neither MAC’s Mick Moorhouse (age group 60+) nor Simon Brister (age group 65+) had been selected for the England team but were both keen to prove that this was a woeful oversight by the England selectors.
In the Open Race held at the end of the afternoon, Moorhouse had a good race on the 8 km course and Brister completed the shorter 6km course in a time of 24 mins 47 seconds, a time better than two of the England team and that would have placed him ninth in the international event.
Sunday saw the 29th Clowne Half Marathon take place, not only a MAC Senior Grand Prix event but also a Derbyshire County Champinship race too.
MAC took the men’s team prize whilst county gold, silver and bronze went to Colin Davenport, Billy Cartwright and Zak Hodgkinson respectively.
Ann Armistead took county gold in the LV65 for her efforts and Jim Thorneycroft bronze in the MV55.
Also on Sunday, Matthew Walker 10k Pudding Run at Shipley Park took place.
This year there had been a complete overhaul of the course and the cold and wet conditions were not enough to dampen runner’s spirits as there was a record number of finishers (884).
This race was the last in the series of eight races for the Derby Run Series and Alan Pickering, who was placed 15th /1515 in the series, prior to this event, was hoping to put Matlock AC into a top ten position with running in this race.
He finished 30th overall in in a time of 37:32 and claimed third MV50 and, in doing so, gained 220 vital points to push Matlock AC in the individual runners-up spot to 1149 points.
Alan is keeping his fingers crossed that his performance over the series will also gain the chance of a good Vet Category placing too.
The next important race for MAC is the Race Three Cross Country in the Booths Decorators League (BDL) which they are hosting for the first time and this will be held at Bakewell Showground on Sunday, November 30.
