Matlock CC 3rd XI’s game with Ilkeston Rutland was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch at Matlock’s second ground at Stonebroom on Sunday.
The Sunday match against Wirksworth & Middleton 3rd XI was held as an annual treat at Causeway Lane.
Normally consisting of a mixture of juniors and seniors, this week captain Guy Roberts led a team of seniors, some new recruits and others fathers of sons engaged by the second 11.
The formula almost worked. They bowled out Wirksworth for 116 in 41 of the allotted 46 overs. “Committee members” Mick Lander (1-43), Ray Mullaney (2-32), Andrew Neill 3-27 and Tim Braund (3-21) did the damage, and only two wides and two leg byes were conceded.
Matlock had 46 (plus four forfeited overs) to score 162 to win.
A cheerful start was made by Tim Jeffery (20) and Ray Mullaney (23) but then it went wrong, despite 47 extras by Wirksworth, leaving last man Tim Braund stranded on one not out in the 41st over, an all out total of 107 just nine runs short.
