Matlock AC runners compete in BDL at Denby

Matlock Athletics Club Round-up

The third race in the Booths Decorators League (BDL) took place at Denby on June 9. Best-placed MAC runner was Billy Cartwright in 17th place in 28.50.

Other MAC results: Karl Webster 37th, Andy Lessiter 48th, Matt Heywood 54th, Anthony Marchington 58th and 2nd MV55, Ted Phillips 97th, Dennis Belbin 113th, Mick Moorhouse 129th and 2nd MV60, Dan Ashcroft 130th, Alison Pye 152nd, Katie Heywood 194th, Jan Forrester 215th and 1st LV60, Andrea Priestley 220th, Julie Goodwin 272nd, Emma Phillips 294th. There were 316 runners.

The men’s team finished seventh and the ladies eighth.

Last Friday saw the Hairy Helmet Relay take place at Darley Park and it was certainly Happy Hour for the eight cocktail teams from Matlock AC as they scooped the overall win and four other age category victories.

Deservedly grabbing the headlines were the male senior ‘Cuba Libre’ squad of Billy Cartwright, Colin Davenport, Craig Allen and Zak Hodgkinson who claimed outright victory in 46.09 to bring the Hairy Helmet north to Matlock.

The ‘Gin Fizz’ junior male team of Ted Phillips, Toby Gill, John Webster and Ed Hoon were clear winners of their group in 49.35 and 12th overall.

The‘Pina Colada’ team of Lilly Phillips, Ava Holden, Lizzie Webster and Michaela Dick won their age group and their time of 56.59 was also the third fastest of all the ladies teams.

The mixed ‘Mojitos’ of Christine Howard, Alison Pye, Rob Allan and Dennis Belbin finished second in their section in 55.52, a time that gave them 41st overall.

The ‘Singapore Slings’ quartet of Karl Webster, Chris Hallas, Peter Wilmot and Alan Pickering finished in 17th overall in 50.44 to claim fifth in their category, while the ‘Martini’ ladies team of Emma Phillips, Karen Morley, Andrea Priestley and Michelle Lester finished fifth in their group in 1.08.44.

The ‘Tequila Sunrise’ squad of Simon Croft, Martin Lea, Dennis Holmes and Anthony Marchington made it three wins in a row to maintain our 100 per cent record in this category in 51.53 and the mixed ‘Sex on the Beach’ foursome of Andy Whittaker, Tessa Whittaker, Jan Forrester and Jim Thorneycroft secured another group win in 1.01.27.

Other recent MAC results included John Hurley finishing 2nd MV60 (117th) in the Nottingham ten-mile road race, while 11-year-old Joseph Curry was third in the Whitworth Thread 5k on Saturday in 19.13, also taking top points in MAC’s Junior GP. Toby Gill was fourth in 19.14 (2nd in GP) and Dennis Holmes fifth in 10.54. Michaela Dick was second lady in 22.07 (3rd in GP).

The Cromford Killer Fell Race on Saturday saw MAC’s Karl Webster second in 23.26, Toby Gill third in 24.03 and Christine Howard first lady and eighth overall in 25.57, while Peter Wilmot, Simon Croft and Jan Forrester took 20, 19 and 18 GP points respectively at the Edale Country Day on Sunday.

Sunday also saw Matlock’s Lizzie Webster second girl in the Tristar race at the Barton Marina Sprint Tri in Staffordshire, brother John second and 19th overall in the junior men’s race. Mum Christine was first LV40 and fifth lady overall.
