Matlock CC suffer a miserable start after a crushing defeat to Elvaston

Matlock’s Division One campaign got off to the worst possible start as they fell to a 223-run defeat away at Elvaston on Saturday.

Having been dealt the blow of losing captain and star batsman Kevin Leatherday to Ilkeston just a week before the new season, Matlock failed to make an impact at all with the bat, bowled out for just 60 runs in reply to Elvaston’s 283-6.

With new captain Ed Lander having won the toss and put Elvaston into bat, the home side wasted little time in setting about the Matlock attack, an opening stand of 67 brought to an end when Nick Briars was out for 19 off the bowling of the Matlock skipper.

But fellow opener Mitchell Bradley would be Matlock’s main tormentor as he hit a fine 124, accompanied in part by Ben Wright’s 41 and Jake Harrold’s 45 as Elvaston posted a healthy total.

Ed Lander took 1-35, David Lander 2-101, Chris Pemberton 2-48 and Stef Jackson 1-18.

Matlock’s reply never gained momentum and only three batsmen made double figures as they were all out in the 25th over, Mark Burton top scoring on 15 as Elvaston eased to victory.
