Matlock edged out by visitors

Matlock U13 27 Chesterfield 32

Matlock fell to a narrow defeat against a Chesterfield side who arrived short of numbers and borrowed players from the hosts to make a fair game.

An early Chesterfield try was quickly countered with a replying try from Danny McCrea after a great lay off from Sam Ball.

The game see-sawed once again as Chesterfield’s strength forced them through to retake the lead.

Determined defensive work from the Matlock backs and in the scrum held Chesterfield at bay, but a third try came after the ball was finally passed along the Chesterfield line.

Ned Tatler refused to give up the ball despite a hand-off to the face and the attentions of multiple opponents and from the resulting scrum, Ball broke through to reduce the lead.

From the Chesterfield kick off, Tom Spivey and George got the ball across to McCrea who ran the entire length of the pitch to score a third try, duly converted by Jack Gothard to move Matlock into the lead, but Chesterfield pushed through to bring the game to half-time poised at 20-17.

Chesterfield stretched their lead to ten points with a converted try but Matlock’s Ball soon replied, the visitors holding on to claim the win.
