McCann in good form as season begins

Jim McCann has been in fine form in the opening weeks of the Elliott Carpet Billiards League, notching superb breaks of 109 and 97 amongst a string of others as Whitworth Institute moved to within a point of the leaders.

Belper Strutt No 1 and Hartington RBL remain locked together at the top after fighting out an 11-11 draw in the latest round of games.

Elsewhere, Edgefold No 1 have soon blown away the cobwebs with a decisive opening win in the newly-sponsored J K Interiors and Joinery Services Snooker League.

Last season’s runners up were playing host to Matlock Club and Richard Ferguson, courtesy of a decisive 22 break, defeated Paul Holmes 71-55 to get the show on the road.

Duncan Harwood (23 break) made it 2-0 with a 73-36 win over Graeme Wood before impressive new talent Andy Russell secured the success in defeating Keith Manlove 66-31.

And there was to be no let-up as Rob Muxlow and finally Neil Parkinson and Russell again, in the concluding doubles, ensured a maximum points haul.

Reigning league champions Bolehill Institute No 1 fell to the club’s No 2 team for the second week running, this time edged out 3-2 in the deciding doubles frame.

Mick Bunting and Keith Robertson (24 break) were impressive performers for the victors while Andrew Brough put up a barnstorming display for the vanquished.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood defeated Belper Strutt No 2 by the odd frame in five in the other contest.
