Meet the captains at Buxton & High Peak Golf Club

GUESS who’s taken over at Buxton & High Peak Golf Club?

The Fairfield club recently brought the curtain down on its milestone 125th anniversary year with the annual presentation of prizes to lady and gentlemen members.

The evenings also marked the appointment of the club’s new captains for 2013.

Former junior president Peter Guess has taken over from Paul Waring as men’s captain. And in what is thought to be a first for the club, Peter will be joined at the same time by his son Alex, who was recently appointed the new junior captain.

“As far as we know, this has never been done before,” said Peter’s wife Amanda on the father-and-son pairing.

“Both of them are very pleased to take on the roles and look forward to representing the club.”

Alex, 15, who attends Buxton Community School, is also following in the footsteps of his older brother Thomas, also a former junior captain at Buxton & High Peak.

Peter, 44, and Alex will be raising money during their captaincies for Help for Heroes in memory of Royal Marine Scott Taylor, a former junior golfer at the club, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan in May 2010.

Cheryl Scowen has handed over the role of Lady Captain to Lisa Walker.

“My dad and my stepmom are former captains, so it is quite an act to follow,” said Lisa, who will be raising money for the Batten Disease Family Association during her 12-month term.

Standing down as club president after a two-year term is Brian MacNaughton.

His replacement is 81-year-old Don McKay, a long-standing club and committee member, who said he was “very honoured” to take on the role.

Brian, a former captain and junior captain at Buxton & High Peak, added: “It is a testing time for all golf clubs at the moment, but High Peak is still strong, and I have been very proud to represent the club these past two years.”
