Mixed fortunes for seconds in league and cup

Matlock Baileans second XI

Matlock Baileans seconds had a mixed weekend in league and cup as they beat Loughborough thirds on Saturday but fell 2-0 in the National Cup to Formby on Sunday.

Knowing a victory would keep pressure on Beeston at the top of the league, Saturday’s encounter was a must-win match for Matlock.

Having most of the play in the first-half , Matlock took the lead when Frankie Price finished off a great move at the far post.

This was no more than was deserved for all their efforts.

But Loughborough Students battled back after half-time and despite last gap defending following several blocks at a short corner, even Rachael Moor’s mid-air block couldn’t prevent the equaliser.

Matlock were, however, able to grab the win in the dying seconds as a scramble in the circle saw the ball finally put away by Chloe Farmer and the points were secured.

In Sunday’s National Cup semi-finals match at Formby, Matlock could have no complaints in losing to a very well organised and skilful team.

Matlock were on the back foot from the off but some good last ditch tackles prevented Formby from scoring until they eventually registered on the strocke of half-time from a short corner.

Man-of-the-match Frankie Price and Rebecca Mead were at the centre of some good attacking moves from Matlock in the second-half but the score was kept down by keeper Chris Poyser’s saves and Jill Beecham deflected a goalbound shot for a corner.

But Formby added a second goal to kill things off and Matlock’s fate was sealed, though they can be proud of their efforts all weekend.

Matlock 3rd XI

The thirds fell 8-1 to Staveley firsts, following up last weekend’s 4-0 loss to top of the league Ashbourne which was despite an outstanding effort from the Matlock side.

Matlock 5th XI

Matlock put in a great performance against top of the table Burton thirds but ultimately fell just short in a 1-0 defeat.

After creating several openings of their own early on, with forwards Lauren Craven and Sophie Boulton unsettling Burton’s defence, but Burton held firm and began to apply pressure of their own.

The Matlock defence did well to diffuse the danger but eventually found the net when the ball bounced over the outstretched foot of keeper Liz English to seal the win.

Players of the match were Anne Young and Elise Charlton.
