Another success for in-form Mannerians

Bakewell Mannerians 20

Melton Mowbray 3

MANNERIANS racked up the latest win of their increasingly impressive Midlands Two East (North) season by seeing off visitors Melton Mowbray on Saturday at The Showground.

Melton made a strong start but once this storm was weathered, they got back into the game and opened the scoring on 20 minutes through Will Moroney’s penalty kick.

Bakewell were now looking confident, handling the ball well and spreading the play when necessary.

Henry Bagshawe, Jack Duncan and Tom Crapper all impressed as the home side looked to increase the lead and this duly occurred when Moroney found Paul Webster on the left, who scored the first try of the match and extend the Bakewell lead to 10-0, connverted by Moroney.

Melton pulled three points back through a penalty but Moroney kicked a drop goal as the game moved into its final 20 minutes and Mannerians looked for a late surge to see them home.

Bagshawe moved into the forwards shortly afterwards, to replace the injured Dan Driscoll, and further Mannerians pressure resulted in Pete Fearn scoring his side’s second try of the afternoon, to all but seal the victory.

Moroney added the extras and, with five minutes remaining, Bakewell were just about there.

There was still time for Mannerians to push on in search of further points but it wasn’t to be, although they could be more than satisfied with a hard-earned victory over tough opponents.

Mannerians 1sts are next in action on Saturday, December 3, away at Notts Moderns.
