Emma Erskine from Jesters Mixed Martial Arts Club in Matlock impressed at the Stand and Deliver invitation kickboxing show held at Kirk Hallam Social Club last Saturday evening.
In front of a packed hall, Highfields student Emma, 17, entered the ring to face her opponent, 22-year-old Steph Young from the Tyne and Wear-based East Coast Kickboxing Academy. Each have held numerous national titles and on paper it looked a perfect match for the three-round contest.
Both started the first round determined to stamp their authority on the fight with Emma trading her strong kicks with her opponent’s punches but by the end of the round it was Emma who edging ahead.
She continued the second round at her usual relentless pace and soon had her opponent on the canvas after a combination of kicks and punches. Despite a warning from the referee for excessive power, Emma continued to dominate the fight with a display of controlled kickboxing landing shots where and when she chose. The fight was all but over in the third round but credit is due to her opponent for completing the fight on a night when many didn’t.
Coach Mark Ball commented: “Emma deserves these wins with the amount of work she puts in at the gym. I don’t think there are many other girls on the circuit who can compete with her at the moment.”
New members are always welcome at the club whether to compete or to keep fit. The club is based in its own gym at the rear of John Hadfield House, Dale Road, Matlock. For details, contact Mark Ball on 07825 876177.
