Ashford-in-the-water move step closer to safety

Ashford-in-the-Water defeated Hundall by four wickets to claim a 25 point haul and move a step nearer to safety.

It was the perfect response or the home side who were keen to make amends following a heavy defeat at Hundall on the second weekend of the season.

Hundall won the toss and elected to bat on a hard dry track and the Ashford opening bowlers, Joe Muir and Pete Marsden, made Hundall work for every run, backed up by some sharp, committed fielding.

The halfway point saw Hundall only three down, but needing to push on to post a challenging total.

The score had reached 97-3 until the venerable Kev Rowney produced a spell of bowling to tear the Hundall batting apart with the final seven wickets only producing another 14 runs and the visitors were all out for 111 from 43.1 overs.

Rowney finished with impressive figures of 12-4-25-6, supported by Marsden 9.1-4-8-2, Dave Raw 5-1-18-1 and Joe Muir 10-0-26-1.

Ashford’s reply followed a similar pattern to Hundall’s in terms of scoring.

Both openers were gone with the score at 21-2 but the middle order steadied the ship with Malcolm Thomas batting patiently for an excellent 31 as Ashford reached their target in the 41st over with six wickets down.

Hundall’s bowlers stuck to their task throughout with the pick of their bowling being Will Newton 10-4-16-2, Daniel Wilde 12-2-29-2, George Hanvere 5-0-18-1 and Joe Stenton 10.2-6-29-1.

This victory and recent run of good form throughout July sees Ashford move up to fourth in the table.

With four games to go they have a 53 point cushion above the relegation places and another year in Division is almost safely within their grasp.
