rugby playing teenagers from Lady Manners School in Bakewell welcomed some Antipodean visitors at the weekend.
A group of 28 students from Xavier College in Melbourne are on tour, a journey which will see them travel to four different countries before returning home.
The 15 and 16-year-olds were billeted and entertained by the parents of the school and were spread far and wide all over the Dales, staying from Thursday to Sunday morning.
The Australians received a warm welcome although this wasn’t neccesarily carried over into the game itself as Lady Manners beat their visitors 68-0.
The home side proved too strong in the tackles, getting over the gameline nearly every time, and there was good speed from the centres and especially the wings in the very soggy conditions.
The Xavier College party has already played a game in Ireland, before travelling to Lancashire, on to Bakewell, and then down to Reigate near London.
After that, they travelled to Belgium to see World War I battleground and rounded off the tour with a match in Paris.
Despite the one-sided nature of the scoreline, a good time was had by all in what were the traditional English rugby conditions of wind and rain.
