Darley Dale Croquet Club held the finals of the first Laura Haywood Shield in Laura’s memory on Monday 7th September.

During the season 13 members played in two divisions leading to the semi-finals between the winner of a division and runner-up in the other division.

In the semi finals Louis McMeeken beat Colin Turnbull 7:1 and David Winder beat David Gregory 7:6.

The winners then played off the final with Louis McMeeken being victorious with a 7:5 win over David Winder.

Ralph Haywood and Ross Holmes (Laura’s children) travelled from Rugby and Dover to make the presentation of the Shield to the winner.

Laura was a member of the club from 2008, the year the club started, and soon became an indispensible member by her enthusiasm and playing ability.

Even though she went in and out of hospital she continued to play a game or so at the age of 97 and when this was not possible drove her scooter around the outside of the courts to check on the state of others play.

The club, which has 34 members, is nearing the end of its eighth season but still has a couple of inter club matches to play.
