It was a double whammy for Matlock’s Lady Golfers when they travelled to Erewash Golf Club to contest for both the Silver and Bronze trophies in the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs Inter Club Finals.
With a perfect late August day giving ideal golfing conditions, and a course at its best, it was a keenly contested final for both teams with the silver team winning by four matches to one against the Chevin Golf Club Ladies team followed by a 3-2 result in favour of the Matlock Bronze Team against Chapel-en-la-Frith.
In her acceptance speech for both the trophies a very proud Matlock Lady Captain Mel Elton congratulated all the Matlock team members and their opponents for both the standard of play and the spirit of the matches.
Unfortunately, after battling through four knock out rounds the ladies Matlock A team suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to the Lingdale B team in the Taskers Ian Burtoft Trophy semi final played at Kibworth Golf Club.
On thehome front” the Matlock ladies entertained their guests at their Invitation Day on 25 August.
A field of 52 ladies enjoyed a course in fine condition and despite the inclement weather an excellent score of 43 points was posted by winners Cythia Machent and her guest from Hallamshire Golf Club, Pauline Bramley, in second place were Jenny Knight and Pat McGivern (Horsley Lodge) with 40 points.
By contrast, Men’s Invitation Day No2 on Sunday 30 August enjoyed absolutely perfect conditions, which was reflected in the consistently high scores recorded with only a two point deference between the first and eighth top pairs with the final prize order being determined by countbacks.
In first place with a score of 46 points was Nigel Rogers and his partner from Chesterfield Golf Club, B. Ramsey followed by second placed Steve Rayner and Nigel Furniss (Hollinwell) with 45 points.
