Matlock Water Polo Club hosted its first ever cup final last weekend, at Arc Leisure Matlock, a proud moment in the club’s history and a sign hopefully of things to come.
Hucknall “B” and hot favourites Southwell were the protagonists in a game that looked competitive until the final quarter.
Southwell, who beat Matlock in their semi-final back in July, had an eight-goal deficit which they only managed to level at the end of the third session.
Their five-goal margin win was ultimately comfortable. The Arc facilities were greatly admired by all who took part and the energy drinks handed out by Tinker’s sandwich store was yet another example of the fine sponsorship the club enjoys.
The handicap cup still represents the greatest chance of success for a developing side such as Matlock.
With the first round matches and season in general starting earlier next season, due to it being Olympic year, preparations are increasing despite being this side of Christmas.
More new signings are anticipated and new players are welcome to try the game.
